Psychedelic dream pop trio, Drugstore, formed in London in 1993 was coined after Gus Van Sant's 1989 film, Drugstore Cowboy. The band fronted by Isabel Monteiro whose smoky vocals and chanteuse swagger could make sober men swoon with gloomy delight. The band's self-titled debut reached #31 in the UK and pays its musical respects to Mazzy Star, Jesus & the Mary Chain and The Velvet Underground. Songs such as "Fader" and "Solitary Party Groover" create a fuzzy white noise of guitar feedback with intense escalating drumming and sultry vocals, while "Accelerate" showcases strummy guitars and other-worldly acoustical atmospherics. On its second album, Monteiro collaborated on a duet with Radiohead's Thom Yorke in 1998 called "El President," which refers to former Chilean President Salvador Allende who was ousted in 1973.
