///Another Stephen Malkmus LP is completed and will see the light of day via Matador in March. That's all the information we have so far and as we know more we'll make sure you do to. [Thanks, Pfork]
According to Billboard.com, Mates of State have been busy working on a new album, already pumping out 8 songs. Death Cab For Cutie's Chris Walla, Spoon's Jim Eno and Peter Katis (Interpol, the National) will all be producing the band's 5th album while keyboardist Kori Gardner experiments with acoustic pianos, a Hammond, and synths instead of her normal keyboard.
This song is not from the new album. I just really enjoy it.
The National last played Chicago in June supporting their latest
endeavor, Boxer, which came out in
May. Back then, the songs were fresh and unfamiliar, but this time around, they
had more time to gestate and ferment with the audience. The band has upgraded
their fan base since performing at The Metro. The sold out show definitely gave
an indication the quintet is gaining worthy recognition.
///Chicagoist has provided all the Lollapalooza lovers out there with the dates for next years festival - cross off August 1st-3rd. Thats all the news for now, but who would you want to see headline? Play at noon? Run the length of Grant Park for?
///Speaking of getting
the love (kind of) PopMatters has this to say about the new album by local favorites Office: "A Night at the Ritz is—hands-down—the single greatest pop achievement of 2007. So why does it feel like a disappointment?"
Rilo Kiley is one of those bands that seem to be popular because of their high profile music exposure on shows like “Grey’s Anatomy,” but surprisingly a lot of supposed music fans have never heard of them. On the contrary, the show at Riv was pretty much sold out so at least the dedicated fans turned out.
///British Sea Power will be releasing the Krankenhaus EP via Rough Trade/World's Fair on October 9th (Digital) and November 20th (CD via Website and Tour Souvenir Stand). Spinner.com has the official MP3 leak for the song "Atom" which has been described as "both a vague and precise song concerned with the confusion of modern living, where over analysis can lead to more questions than answers, whether its relationships or quantum theory."
One of the more endearing traits of the bands who regularly play the east side of Los Angeles is that their members often aren’t the complete egomaniacs you normally expect musicians to be. It’s not "The Me Show" with them all the time, they probably don’t wear eyeliner or have haircuts that are smarter than they are, and they seem more concerned about sharing songs than propelling their personalities to superstardom.
And rarely is that more apparent than with The Happy Hollows: drummer Chris Meanie is easily one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet, bass player/vocalist Charlie Mahoney reminds you of that semi-quiet, friendly guy from your advanced history class in high school, and lead singer/guitarist Sarah Negahdari is kind of magic… a grinningly happy median between spiritual and silly. Or as Vonnegut would put it, a "wampeter."
Haven't heard them yet? Imagine if The Pixies were more experimental or Deerhoof attempted to be listenable. The band and I met for brunch a few Sundays back to discuss the state of the
things for them right now, where they’re going next, and what it’s like
making a home halfway between art and pop.
As Joe alluded to last week, this is, indeed, a big week for new releases. Amidst the crowded field, we've got local heroes Office finally making their grand full-length debut today, A Night At the Ritz. Full list after the jump...
///Chicago's own Oh My God were hit head on while on tour in Ohio. Another vehicle crossed the center line and the whole unfortunate collision resulted in serious knee, wrist, back, finger and nose fractures. Everyone survived.
///Yea Big, the Mai-Shi-mash-upper, and Kid Static have combined to give the world a "debut album of 'retro-futuristic' comic book beats and rhymes." Look for it on October 23rd. Check out an MP3 of the mash-up and from their debut album. Then check them out live in Chicago at Ronnies (10/3), The Note (10/21), The Darkroom (11/9), and The Kinetic Playground (11/16).
///Columbia/Legacy are releasing a definitive Dylan collection featuring his more famous and influential songs. You can purchase on October 2nd as either a 3-CD box set, 3-CD digipak, or a single CD select song overview. Track list after the jump.
///Richard Reinhardt (a.k.a. Rickie Ramone - you know, of The Ramones) filed a federal lawsuit claiming that he has not received the proper royalties from the online sales of the songs he wrote. He is requesting $900,000 worth in royalties and an injunction preventing the use of his songs "Smash You," "Somebody Put Something in My Drink," "Human Kind," "I'm Not Jesus," "I Know Better Now" and "(You) Can't Say Something Nice." You know, all the hits. [Thanks, Billboard]
///Animated yet dead band the Gorillaz announced last week that they would be releasing a two-disc-b-sides record available in either regular or deluxe. It will be released November 6th via Virgin in the States. [Thanks, Spacelab]
After a long week of work, there was certainly nothing better to raise one's spirits than the combination of Bonde de Role and Juiceboxxx. Their high-energy, at times absurd and totally instrument-less performances made for an extremely fun Friday night at the Bottle.
///Billboard has reported that EMI Records has released Radiohead'sThe Bends and OK Computer to be available via download. The records have appeared in U.K. online retailer 7Digital's store. No word on how involved Radiohead is in the decision. [Thanks, Spacelab]
///Chicago's No Funeral seems to be calling it quits. They are calling it "street pizza." The last of the pizza can be devoured at the Fireside Bowl (2648 W. Fullerton) on Sunday September 23rd. Show starts at 9pm. They play first. It's $5 and 21+. Helen Money and Plague Bringer will be closing out the night. I really dug these guys.
///Punknews.org (I know we linked them twice in 2 days, sorry) has been featuring videos of bands from The Fest 6, which takes place in Gainesville, Florida. Normally we wouldn't care about that sunny part of the country, but The Fest 6 this year is chock full of Chicago's best (and not so best) punk bands. Naked Raygun, The Arrivals, Das Kapital, The Methadones, and the Sass Dragons will all be playing. Buy your plane tickets now.
The Dead Milkmen were formed in Philly during 1983. They recorded and toured the country for 10 years before getting sick of crowding into a van for laps around the country. Apparently the sickness didn't stick completely and The Low Budgets (featuring at least one member of The Dead Milkmen) are doing laps around the country. They stop by The Note on Tuesday September 25th.
///Kaki King is all but finished working on her fourth album, which is due out early next year on Velour. She worked with producer Malcolm Burn (Bob Dylan, John Mellencamp) who pushed her to "be creative in the moment" and even said "Look ... this f*cking music sounds dorky! It's in 5/4 and there's no melody and I don't understand it." Apparently she likes that sort of thing. [Thanks, Billboard]
