///The RFC staff is currently debating the virtues of the inaugural Galactic Zoo Discs release, J.T. IV's Cosmic Lightning(out 11/14 via Drag City). It's a reissue of sorts of music by a forgotten local recluse who cut a few punk 45s in the 80s that were barely promoted and rarely noticed. Is this awesome or just manufactured nostalgia that's awesomely bad? We'll keep you posted if we reach a verdict.
The most amazing thing happened this weekend when I went to the cinema to catch an 8:30 film: at 8:30pm the lights went down and the projector started playing. Sure, there were 15 minutes of ads and another 10 minutes of trailers, but as anyone who has been to a cinema in the past few decades would, I anticipated these. A few hours later, I was at home writing these sentences.
As a fan of live music, I couldn't believe how timely this was. The cinema's website indicated that the show time was 8:30, and shortly thereafter, it began. What a revolutionary concept! Give or take a few minutes, I had a large degree of prior knowledge about when to expect ads, trailers and ultimately the feature. So who granted the exception to rock venues?

/// Dates for Lollapalooza 2009 have been announced. Mark your calendars free the weekend of August 7-9. The three day music festival takes place in Chicago's Grant Park. You can begin your headline speculations now.
/// As if Oasis hasn't been getting enough press lately. Front-man Liam Gallagher spoke out against the attack on his brother last month at the Virgin festival in Toronto last month. "Our boy" stated that he would "have cut his [the attacker's] dick off and made him eat it." (via) I should make some joke utilizing "Digsy's Dinner" here.
If I were to ask my 17 year old self if I thought I would be seeing Beck again at 29 I don't know how I would answer that. This is embarrassing to say now, but the last time I saw Beck was at one of those Twisted Christmas shows when I didn't know any better. I remember, vividly, the lanky chap scurrying and fitting about on stage in a leisure suit. If I recall correctly he was supporting Odelay at the time. Yes, I know that he's had loads of albums, varying in sounds and style, between 1993's Golden Feelings and 2008's Modern Guilt (I've got an unopened copy of the Loser single on vinyl if you need me to validate my "cred" or whatever). I guess all I can say is that I regret not seeing him between 1997 and last Friday.
Next Monday, experimental Austin rockers Shearwater return to Chicago for an all ages show at the Lakeshore Theatre. And, as usual, RFC wants to hook you up and put you on the list. Just drop us a email at radiofreechicago(at)gmail.com with "Roctober Shearwater" in the subject line by Friday at noon for your chance to win. Good luck!
It's been a long year since The Veils were in town and, in that time, the hopeless devotion fans here feel for them has grown even stronger. The four-piece New Zealand band (now based in London) plays songs quite different from other bands that have come from NZ and toured here such as the bubblegum pop music of The Brunettes or the psychedelic pop sounds of The Ruby Suns. The Veils seem to create an awe inspiring presence, both in their live set and in their records that transcends the idea of fun and gets straight to a sense of importance.
Starting the show off alone Slim treated the audience to a new song before bringing the war eagles out and ripping into "Honey Pie." It terms of a fun live show Langhorne Slim and the War Eagles are as close as it can get to a sure thing. Pictures do little justice to the energy live but here are a few anyway.
RFC alum Robyn Detterline wanted us to pass along that the latest issue of 10,000 Tons of Black Ink is now available via the Literary Writers Network. In addition to fiction, photography, and a comic,
it also features a compilation of music by Chicago bands like Maps and Atlases,
A Light Sleeper, Rock Falls and Opal Wood. You can purchase the entire lot on the LWN website or cruise on over to such fine local business establishments as Chicago Comics, Quimby's, Laurie's Planet of Sound and Reckless Records.
