Beach House rung in 2010 with their third album, Teen Dream, quickly raising everyone's expectations for the year's new releases in music. The New York duo, Sleigh Bells surprised many at the end of 2009, at the CMJ showcases becoming one of the more buzzed about acts by all blogs everywhere. Sleigh Bells rode those waves through this year's SXSW building momentum before finally releasing their debut, Treats. Both duos from the East Coast sit on opposite sides of aesthetic and sound, Sleigh Bells with their brash delivery and heart thumbing beats as Beach House creates slow lyrical epic symphonies grasping at the listeners heart strings with Victoria LeGrand's heavily passionate wails.
Similarities are exposed as each record unravels addressing romanticized ideas and strong angst like female personas both acts sing of nostalgic experiences and the necessity of love in their life. Singer Alexis Krause with a more in your face presentation stands her ground with a rap fashioned style intertwined with a soft almost sensual hum of the melody, creating a unique delivery on the multiple layers of danceable dissonance. “Run the Heart” exposes Krause's sweetness and sincerity as she attempts to control the situation of her natural desires wanting to reason with her feelings and avoiding succumbing to the thralls of the opposite sex. In Beach House's “Lover of Mine” Legrand sings of a fearless approach towards the idea of love, knowing there may be consequences of her actions but the pleasure is worth the pain.
Both bands will play on Sunday at Pitchfork, Beach House @ 3:20 while Sleigh Bells go on @ 7:40.
