After you see the new it band, Miniature Tigers, you might as well kick off your shoes and relax for another 45 minutes, because you can’t miss the Dodos' set, or you'll be sorry. I take that back, don’t take off your shoes in Grant Park... but do relax, you’ll have the whole day ahead, and what you’re about to see will blow you away-- count on it.
Though I will tell you what I love about the Dodos: the
group’s creative approach folk rock, undeniably still grounded in an accessible
format (see: Miller Chill commercial), is rooted in entirely different genres.
Heartthrob Meric Long, the singer-songwriter, studied West African drumming
before ever writing a beat for the band, and Logan Kroeber was an experienced
metal drummer. You’d think he’d play a double bass, but instead doesn’t even
use a bass drum and often tapes tambourines to his feet. I’ll certainly be
there with bells on my shoes, side-stepping to every polyrhythm.
Erykah Badu- Sunday 5:00-6:00
Oh mystical earth mama, you didn’t need to strip down to
your bare bad self this year for me to appreciate your honesty—your cosmic ambiance and mad feminine power had already captivated my heart. But I love you
evermore for your directness and the importance you place on our carnal
freedoms.
MGMT- Sunday 6:00-7:15
I’m so going to haul ass from one side of the park from
Erykah Badu’s set to get to the Budweiser stage to secure a hot spot for MGMT
and then weasel my way in for Arcade Fire. I made a giant mistake in 2008 (my
last Lollapalooza) by skipping out on the MGMT show—even though I liked
“Oracular Spectacular,” and even though all my friends warned me not to miss
it. It was later hailed as the best show of the weekend. I learned my lesson.
And yes, please pass the art-rock. That’s what I’m here for.
Im so unfortunate to missed it. Hope there will be next time.
