The Drones performance had all the makings of a great live show. It was animated, it was sincere, and it was intense. The live show had a sort of “reckless beating” feel to it.
There were moments of musical chaos on stage, which can work at times but did not for me on this night. It was entertaining sure enough, but something fell flat. I don’t know if The Devastations put me in another mind set, if the Empty Bottle was too small for their sound, or if the crowd was not feeling the bedlam on a Monday night, but it all just missed the mark somehow. I couldn’t understand a single lyric. Everything seemed in a haze of sound with nothing ever really stepping forward and declaring itself. It was all just one organism that wreaked havoc on stage but never fully engaged the audience. I don’t doubt the Drones ability. The live performance was enough for me to go visit their albums and I am beginning to grow a taste for it. Their albums display much more depth than I noticed from this live show. Maybe it all just means I will have to see them again.
