Lavender Diamond’s Imagine Our Love is dreamy postmodern folk. Though it sounds quite different than El Perro Del Mar’s self titled album, it is similar lyrically in the way that the Becky Stark uses mininal repeating lyrics to create a sense of anthem. Before you realize it, you know all of the words and find yourself singing it without abandon. You can’t help but think Becky Stark has the cure to the modern age apathy infecting us all with her sense of melody even when her lyrics are quite melancholy: “My shadow is a Monday” But with the drums, guitar, and keyboard accompanying that beautiful voice, the arrangements of the songs around the lyrics are also key and make Imagine Our Love a truly memorable solid album you won’t ever want to abandon.

What my main concern about live was that Becky Stark’s voice wouldn’t hold up to the amazing range it shows on the album. Luckily, this was not the case and those songs and she herself seemed instantly timeless. Though it was the dark Empty Bottle, she came out dressed in a emerald green ball gown looking as classic as Grace Kelly ever did. You couldn’t tear your eyes away from her soft expressive face, that long hair and those sparkling eyes as she sang song after flawless song.
What may have thrown some people off was the inbetween song banter in which Becky Stark was as punchy as ever. She took grave offense to those talking by the bar (with good reason!) and deliberately confused Chicago with Detroit on at least three separate occasions. At times, I felt like she was trying to come off as just a little flighty but I have no doubt she knew exactly what she was doing when she did this. I can see people resenting it but I’m so endeared with her songs and voice, I just found it nice she had a real strong personality.
