Balún @ Schuba's 7/20/07

Balún brought their ambient electronic pop, by way of San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Schuba's on Friday night for a subdued yet engaging affair.

At times electronic pop has a way of feeling a bit self indulgent or irreverent, Balún seems to side step these traps with the greatest of ease. Their music feels entirely unpretentious and sincere. While on the surface the music seems best suited for the background the enjoyment they seem to have in creating it manages to pull it across as a live show. The music certainly won't overwhelm but it does have a way of surrounding you with a sort of hypnotic quality. If the easy going manner in which they play it doesn't draw you in then surely Angelica Negron's soft spoken, whispery vocals will do the trick.
