But that was only one of three shows I went to last week. Second on my list was Dan Auerbach with Hacienda and Those Darlins at the Metro this past Friday. As I arrived Hacienda was taking the stage. I hadn't done my homework beforehand so I wasn't sure what to expect. Needless to say this band didn't particularly impress me but I didn't find them completely awful either. They just didn't engage me. After moving more towards the middle for a chance at better sound, Dan Auerbach took the stage and Hacienda joined him as his backing band. Auerbach is currently touring in support of his debut solo album Keep it Hid. The album almost sounds just like the Black Keys, except not. You can tell this isn't a Black Keys album despite the similarity in sound. This was also quite evident on stage as well. Having seen The Black Keys several times now I was left wanting something more with Auerbach's solo performance. Were my expectations too high? Was I being too harsh? Or was the performance lackluster? Needless to say, I do recommend giving Keep it Hid a shot, it's really solid release with a wide range of sounds. This one in particular sounds like something straight out of 1973 or something.

And yet the fun never ends. I rounded out my music week with A.A. Bondy at Schubas on Saturday. I went and saw Bondy play the same venue sometime in November when it was but him, an audience attentively sitting in chairs (?), his guitar, a mic and harmonica. This time around things were very different. Gone were the constraints of the rows of chairs and there on stage with Bondy were a bassist from 'Bama and a drummer from Wisconsin. Bondy not only had an acoustic guitar (which went down for the count with a broken string early on) but also an electric guitar. Louder and more percussive versions of "Vice Rag", and "Rapture (Sweet Rapture)" almost sounded like brand new songs by comparison to what I was used to hearing. I enjoyed getting the opportunity to see the two sides of Auguste Arthur Bondy in somewhat of a short period of time. All the while still the one of the very most charming and sincere person to watch perform, clearly playing music because it his is passion and his love, and ever so grateful for his audience.
