Ever since I moved to Chicago, I've subscribed to the thought process that if you're bored in this city, there is something a little wrong with you. Chicago never has a shortage of things to do and October's been proving that as fact since it began. It is, after all, concert season in the city and starting on the 21st, that statement rings more true than ever before.
On the 21st, not only do The Get Up Kids hit the Metro with previous RFC interviewee Kevin Devine but Ryan Gosling's Dead Man's Bones will be at Schubas for two shows, one early for the all ages crowd and a later evening show for us older folks. If you're concerned about choosing between the two, a couple things might make your decision easier: The Get Up Kids and Kevin Devine will also be playing the Metro on the 22nd so if you can't make it out on Wednesday, don't fret. Also, the Dead Man's Bones shows are both sold out. I'd keep an eye on the Schubas twitter just in case any last minute tickets are released but it's sure to be a madhouse. Ladies love that Ryan Gosling.
After the Get Up Kids roll out of town, the 23rd brings dreamy pop siblings Eisley to The Vic in support of not-so-dreamy emo rockers Say Anything for what's bound to be an interesting bill, to say the least. A few streets down, the gentleman who have just released one of my Top 5 records of the year, the wonderful Dawes will be in Chicago with the just-as-wonderful Langhorne Slim, bringing a well-crafted, artfully played night of folk to Lincoln Hall, the new venue brought to you by the folks that run this girl's favorite Chicago venue, Schubas Tavern.
Thankfully, the 24th only has one event that's made it's way to my calendar so far and it's a concert I've been looking forward to for quite literally years. Pedro the Lion's prolific front man, David Bazan, is touring behind the long-time-coming Curse Your Branches LP with a full band and is making his way to the Windy City, playing Lincoln Hall with support from Say Hi.
With it being the grand opening of Lincoln Hall, it should come as no surprise that October 25th will bring another show to the fledgling venue. South Bend, Indiana's finest, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, will be playing the official grand opening of Lincoln Hall with what's sure to be a raucous show as one thing Leo never lacks in a massive amount of energy. For those sick of spending their entire week at Lincoln Hall however, former Hot Water Music front man Chuck Ragan will be at Reggie's as part of The Revival Tour with some serious support from Austin Lucas. I say "serious support" not because Ragan needs it but rather because Lucas is seriously that good. For those not too busy with Ted Leo, I highly recommend spending your evevening at Reggie's with those two lovely fellows.
While the 26th and 27th seem relatively quiet, the 28th brings another two noteworthy shows competing for your attention. Once again, Lincoln Hall makes the list, this time with Great Lake Swimmers, whose gentle songs are too beautifully realized to be missed... Unless, that is, you weren't lucky enough to see fun. last time they hit Chicago, selling out Schuba's. fun. will be at the House of Blues with Taking Back Sunday but if emo isn't your thing, don't hold their tour mates against them. fun. is one of the best live bands today. The buzz surrounding this veritable indie pop super group is not without cause and fun. are worth the $23-plus-handling-charges price of admission alone.
