Shows of 2009:
5. Phoenix at FNAC Forum (Paris), May 25thRecord release show for "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix" at the biggest "Best Buy" equivalent in the city. Less than 150 people made it to their full free set, just as Liztomania was hitting the airwaves.
4. P.O.S. at Mains d'Oeuvres (Paris), June 9th
With Plain Ole Bill on the tables and Stef on the mic, the Twin Cities landed in the northern suburbs attracting Midwesterners and curious internationals to a sound that nominated him for a MTVu Woodie for Best Performer of 2009. March 18th at the Bottom Lounge can't come fast enough to get reacquainted to this Midwestern hardcore punk and rapper, who can't not stop getting better each successive year.
3. Wax Tailor at Schuba's Tavern, October 12th
J.C. Le Saoût's first Chicago show brought Norway/North Carolina's Mattic and France's Charlotte Savary along with nearly 140 out on a dreary Monday. Coupled with surging visuals, ethereal vocals and heavy rhymes, Wax Tailor produced a free wheeling turntablism mixed with cello and flute for the best independent hip-hop show of the year.
2. Monotonix at Logan Square Auditorium, October 3rd
Ever have those mornings when you try desperately to comprehend what happened last night? Those moments where you just black out and hope to God you'll remember? It's been three months and I still am trying to get over the shock of what Logan Square experienced…If the Monotonix come to your venue, just go. No need to listen beforehand, just go.
1. Esser, Miike Snow and Lykke Li at the Bottom Lounge, August 7th
Esser had electrical issues yet effortlessly powered through them. Miike Snow exuded European house party, prior to their world television domination. And Lykke Li covered Lil' Wayne's "A Milli".
