It's no big secret that my favorite place to catch a show in all of Chicago was Schubas until their sister venue, Lincoln Hall, opened. Now the top two spots on my internalized list of great venues are both taken by establishments owned by those crazy Schuba brothers and if I had to give you a guesstimation of how many concerts I saw between the two venues in 2009, I'd say it's bordering on 100. In fact, I spent five days at Lincoln Hall within the venue's first week of existence. It's been suggested that Lincoln Hall is my building soul mate. I'm inclined to agree.
When it was announced yesterday, via
Schubas' twitter, that they're now tallying votes for the first annual
Schubie awards, I was pumped to say the least. Covering categories such as Best Schubas/Lincoln Hall Headliner and Opening Act Most Likely To Succeed, the Schubies had me taking a trip down memory lane and reminiscing about the dozens upon dozens of great shows I saw at the venues this year, starting with Young Coyotes in February at Schubas original site and ending with Great Lakes Swimmers in October at Lincoln Hall.
The Schubies' don't just cover Schubas related acts, though- In addition to being able to vote for your favorite Schubas/Lincoln Hall jukebox song, you can also cast votes for your favorite album of the year and your favorite Chicago based music blog. Not that I'm implying anything, but Radio Free Chicago got my vote in the latter category and as a long standing Schubas concert goer, I can't think of a bigger honor for RFC than to take that award or at least take a good chunk of the votes out from under the competition.
