I've been trolling the blog aggregator Elbows for quite a few years and in that time, I don't think I once saw Vic Chesnutt make the "Hot Artists" box to the right side of the site. Understandable - The honor of "most downloaded" was usually reserved for buzz bands and the occasional irresistible pop act. Low key folk musicians didn't often rank.
Unless, of course, some tragedy has befallen them. It's been all over the internet for the past few days that Vic Chesnutt died. Reportedly overdosing on muscle relaxers on December 24th, Chesnutt went into a coma and was pronounced dead on Christmas day.
The fact of the matter is that people love to lionize the dead. A perfect example of this is Elliott Smith, who was admittedly more famous than Chesnutt was at the time of his death if only for his work on the Good Will Hunting soundtrack but is now, postmortem, considered a forefather of indie rock. Would he be so highly regarded if it wasn't for his death? It may be considered indie sacrilege to say but I highly doubt it, just as I doubt Vic Chesnutt would ever make it on the Elbows' "Hot Artists" chart if he was still with us.
If one good thing comes from Chesnutt's death, it's the fact that countless more people will be aware of his lengthy career, spanning fifteen albums over a nineteen year period. A little daunting, I know, but a good jumping off point would be the two albums he released just this past year, Skitter Take Off and At The Cut.
For more on Chesnutt, listen to his stellar Daytrotter session with Elf Power, check out Paste Magazine's memorial playlist, Largehearted Boy's Chesnutt themed Daily Downloads, and take a second to read Cincinnati based blog Boil It First's V.C. rant.
i thought about that before, its nice blog i really enjoyed it , This post too really i enjoyed going through it with regards.
