Good news, Radio Free Chicagoans! You've got another chance to check out an up-and-coming band from the greater Midwest! This time, it's Detroit's Prussia, purveyors of thickly-layered, loosely constructed psych-pop.
Prussia's sound has varied a lot over the years, shifting from their pop-focused debut, Dear Emily, Best Wishes, Molly, to the much darker EP Blessed Be, Yours Truly is Spirit & Soul. Of their new recordings, parts remind me of African chants and drums, but it's more Animal Collective than Paul Simon (or Vampire Weekend). This kind of music impresses the hell out of me—it sounds effortless and free, like it was made with an acoustic guitar, sample pad and a few friends, but its lushness washes over you, piling layers on one after another, like a laundry basket full of blankets. Catch them Wednesday night at Pancho's--their live show has an excellent reputation for energy and variability, and is not to be missed.
And hey, what the hell. Here, have their Daytrotter session.
thank you for having a good discussion on this topic
